Disable power Liftgate

I know you can disable the "stand behind" feature of the liftgate in the settings menu. I want to know if I can disable the power liftgate so my fob button won't open it up while it's in my pocket. I already have a silicone cover over the fob but it still unintentionally opens my hatch. Today makes the third time my hatch was open while parked at work.

I'm guessing you tried the settings on the dash? Not sure if it can be turned off completely. I've had to learn to not have anything else in the pocket my keys are in.

Yeah, I already looked and there's no setting for the fob, thanks. I'm thinking maybe put a zip tie around the fob thus covering the button.

Does your liftgate still have the unlock button above the license plate?? I wonder if you can just remove the lift actuators and just install the base model's struts instead.

I think the power lift gate makes sense for older, short or disabled people. But for an able bodied person, I prefer the normal lift gate.

An alternative to replacing the struts :-) Disassemble your key fob - my '17 Santa Fe Sport is shown in picture. On mine, you could either remove the trunk "button" from underneath the silicone cover shown in the left side of image - it just pops out with a little coercing - or if you prefer, you could trim down the button (it has a small point that presses the tiny black contacts shown in the center piece of the image.

The former would be good if you didn't want to make the change permanent (and especially if you use a key fob cover- then you wouldn't even notice the button was missing.) The latter would be a permanent change, obviously.

You should be able to disable the power liftgate via the settings menu through steering wheel controls. I know because I disabled mine as it has accidentally opened 4 or 5 times now due to button on key fob somehow getting depressed in my pocket. Very frustrating and annoying situation. I wish there was a manual control of the liftgate on higher trim models.

So you're saying that disabling the auto liftgate through the dash menu will also make the fob button inop? Thanks, I'll give that a try.

But does the tailgate still work using the rear button if you disable it on the dash?

Tailgate does not work in any way once disabled through steering wheel controlled settings menu.

Correct. It's a pain to have to operate in this fashion but in my case I have no choice.
