"Panic" may be a bit strong of a word but it will suffice until someone comes up with another less anxious descriptive adjective. But the first time it happened to me? I was driving up the highway and, well, that ding had my attention! WTF? Maybe "panic" IS the operative word to use.
I'm "almost used to it," now. But when I look back on that first time? I have to laugh at myself, now. I wonder if the engineers that came up with this idea thought about the feature's first-time effect on an operator? They probably got a good chuckle over it during a lunch break.
If there were ever good reasons for us to read the owner's manual, this might be one of them.
To disable that feature, keep your radio volume control setting at "38." It will still ding, you just won't hear it.
