Question Hyundai iPhone 5 charging through USB

We're a two Hyundai household. I am not able to charge my new iPhone 5 with it's own cable ("smart" Lightning/USB cable) plugged into the car's USB connection. Not to mention that the entire connection doesn't work because the radio doesn't recognize the digital connection, you'd think that at least the power ought to work. Alas, not.

So, to use the phone via Bluetooth (thank G_d that does work without connection) for longer periods, I would need a charger in addition to running bluetooth.

Questions:
  1. Does anybody have any other workarounds to use USB in new(er) Hyundai vehicles?
  2. Is there some modification that can be done to at least enable charging the phone from USB despite the audio and control connection not working? Plugging in the analog audio (in place of) the supplied car cord for example.
  3. I considered an adapter (from Apple and/or third parties). Alas, they are not available and not many seem to know exactly what will or won't work with the adapter. Any user experiences on that?? Notably, Apple has conflicting warnings and very generic ones at that!

My Car:
2012 Tucson
2.4L DOHC, 16 Valve, 4Cylinder, 6 speed Automatic Transmission
Wife's Car:
2013 Elantra

I got a USB car charger, the kind that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I got a Scosche Revolt dual port for $20 at Staples, Walmart also has some. From what I've read, you need to get a 2.1 amp charger and not the 1amp. With the 1amp, if you are running maps, the charger can't keep up with the draw on the battery. With the 2.1, the phone charges just as fast as being plugged into the wall. If you check out the macrumors forum site, there are quite a few threads about this same issue, adapters are starting to ship it seems so hopefully we'll know more soon about whether it will work or not.

I bought a Belkin 1 amp charger from Target after getting my iPhone5. It does charge up the phone when I'm running the Waze app, which uses the GPS. However I am going to buy a 2-USB car charger so my wife can charge her BB at the same time - many models for around $10 on Amazon.

I am frustrated the iphone 5 won't charge through the USB port so I'm wondering if Hyundai will come out with a new adapter, which i would get only so i can get control the iphone through the radio and get the song metadata. Appears from a quick check of other threads that iOS6 may be a culprit to the USB issues.

On Amazon the reviews for adapters seem iffy. I'm going to wait until monoprice comes out with an adapter or a cable, it will be less expensive than the current ones out there and I've had good experience with their adapters.

None of the adapters put right now are decent, give it a few months and we will probably have new third party iPod-aux cables for lightning. I'm in the same boat. Bought my Santa Fe at the end of August, only got to use my 4s in it for a week then bought an iPhone 5. I bought a dual port USB adapter to charge our phones in the mean time and play music over Bluetooth

This issue is pretty frustrating As per the posts here my iPhone 5 isn't recognised at all by the stereo in my new ix35 yet it works fine in our other car(Peugeot) when connected via usb. In there it charges fine and ipod controls show up and work as they did on my iPhone 4.
I did purchase a lightning to micro usb adapter along with micro usb to usb cable so I had a spare charging and syncing cable but haven't tried that yet in car to see if any different result.
Will check and post result on here.

I did see another post where a lightning to 30 pin adapter( i presume it is the apple one) has been used with the Hyundai cable and an iPhone 5 and appears to work but the sound quality is affected. As the 30 pin adapters are way over priced I wouldn't want to buy one to try it out unless I knew it was definitely going to work correctly.

Does anyone have an apple lightning to 30 pin adapter and could try with both the hyundai ipod cable and just a standard apple usb to 30 pin cable to see if stereo recognises this?
Be interesting to see if it recognises either. If it recognises both but the sound is affected using the Hyundai cable then I wonder if could use an old apple usb to 30 pin cable into the USB port for charging and hopefully iPod controls and data then maybe a aux cable from the headphone port on iPhone 5 to the aux in port could add the sound. May be a workaround until any sort of update or new working cable is released

This is the cheapest solution. I bought one of these locally with 2 ports on it instead, because we have 2 iPhone 5's. it does not list it as comparable with the 5 but it most certainly is, it's just a USB power supply.. It's low profile makes it not waste any space in the tray area, and they also have it available in a few different colors.

I have the apple adapter and the Hyundai ipod cable and it works fine in the 2012 Azera. Phone charges and I am able to access my music, folders etc just like I did with the iPhone 4s. I did not notice a decrease in sound quality, but will pay more attention to see if I can detect anything.

Great thanks for taking time to reply
I actually went out to apple store today and bought the adapter so hopefully it works ok. I could do with the adapter anyway for using with all the 30 pin accessories I still have from my iPhone 4 but will be great if it works in car and I can access the ipod functions.
Will test it out when I get home as the wife is using the Hyundai today.

Just to confirm another working iPhone 5 with the lightning to 30 pin adapter. Tested it last night and works as I would expect. Phone charges and iPod controls work. Sounds seems fine and no noticeable difference from playing over bluetooth and same as sound from an old ipod nano with 30 pin connection that I tested with the hyundai cable.
Only difference I can see is the old nano displayed a Hyundai logo when connected which I am guessing is from the iPod out function and this doesn't appear when the iPhone 5 is connected via adapter. No loss there as just glad to get the iPod controls and charging from same connection.
for reference this is in a UK ix35 2012 model.
