How much does it cost to get a spare key?

I just got a used 2016 sonata with flip key.
So I want to get a spare key in case I done something stupid, I ask the dealer and they say it's around 150.
It's was higher then I expect... does it also cost the same if I bought an uncut and unprogramed key form ebay and get it working?
Any advise? Thanks

These are smart keys, even the one with the flipout key. They need to be programmed to the car, so dealer is probably your best bet. $150 is not bad at all.

$150 is cheap these days for modern keys.

Some locksmiths have the equipment to program the ECU and BCM to recognize a new key fob so you might call around and see if you can find one.
That being said, $150 really isn't that bad these days for the purchase of the key/keyfob, cutting the key and programming the car to match.

i'm not sure it is a good idea to let locksmith to reprogram your ecu and bcm, them messing up the key is one thing, messing up your car electronics is totally different, it may come out to a lot more than new key from a dealer.

Agree!! Not worth saving $1.00 and messing it up.

Didn't you get two keys with this vehicle? If not, who has the other key? Purchased many used vehicles, ha, nine kids, always insisted on get two sets of keys with it.

$150.. is way too much, only about a bucks worth of electronics on the inside, but with these, the remote is the main component., 50 bucks is far more common, not sure about your dealer.

Haven't checked with my two locksmiths in town recently, both told me it costs $12,000.00 to buy a laser cutting machine and a heck of a lot of keys would have to be burnt before they even get a return on their investment. Still can get into these things with a couple of hack saw blade like things without the teeth. Ice pick works in a second. Goodbye 75 cents keys.

According to the 2017 shop manual assuming the Sonata is the same, smart key should be ordered from the dealer, a special PIN number is encoded into the remote, also need a Hyundai GDS to program it, so they got us where they want us. Shop manual says this system only supports two remotes, so no sense in purchasing a third.

Is there an electronic version of the LF shop manual available?

My local dealer said it'll cost me $55 to program the key. This is for my second key mailed by my out of state dealer where I purchased my car, but later this dealership itself paid for the programming as well.
