2015 Sonata turbo left mom stranded

My mom called me today quite concerned about her Sonata turbo leaving her on the side of the road with only 17k. She said it felt like it was stuttering or slipping when accelerating and refused to go faster then 73. It kept getting slower until it wouldn't go above 9 mph, at which point the check engine light came on and she gave up and pulled over. It took 3 hours for roadside to pick her up. Dealer said some kind of solenoid might be bad, mentioned the spark plugs and questioned where she gets gas. Any other turbo owners ran into this kind of problem? I'll know more tomorrow when hopefully she can pick it up. She just can't believe a car with such low mileage broke down.

2015 Sonata Eco silver/gray int - roomy, fast ride. Traded at 16k due to DCT issues and uncomfortable drivers seat.
2012 Elantra Touring GLS 5-speed 43200 - 67065 miles. Roomy reliable car. Traded for Sonata.
2010 Hyundai Accent GS Premium auto - traded in 2012 after 57k trouble free miles

Dealer stated high pressure fuel pump failed and sprayed gas on to one of the spark plugs, fouling that plug. The one plug was replaced and they ordered the fuel pump. Pretty dangerous that it sprays gas when it fails....

Unfortunately when things break, they don't always break in a safe way. Most components are designed with the "weak" part meaning a relatively safe failure, but that is not always what goes wrong. Sorry to hear she had to wait so long. I am in Phoenix area and see roadside assistance companies on the highway every day. I do not know why it takes so long for a response, they are EVERYWHERE here.

See, Flash, being the fastest isnt always the best if you are wrong.

For future reference, our dealer told us to call them direct in the need of roadside assistance, even when not in town. Avoids the delay of bureaucracy. That, and you don't have a face to complain to at Hyundai, the dealer wants your business directly.

High pressure pumps go out on any brand of car, my 2012 MBZ C250 that is a 1.8 l turbo had it go out at 50,000 miles. . 2 times it went into limp mode (will not allow you to drive over a specific speed or rpm) to safely let it drive to get to a safe area without damaging the engine further. Went to dealer and first time it did not show up as bad just low pressure so they adjusted and they returned the car to me, about a month later did it again and that was when they diagnosed it and replaced, Any FI turbo car could have this or similar failures. When they said it "sprayed gas all over the plug: that is not a dangerous situation other than the breakdown. The gas is just flooding the one or more cylinders.

Ive never used hyundai road service Im a 35 yr AAA member, but in general in any normal place Ive never waited more than 30 minutes, usually in LA it is more like 15-20 to get service.

She lives in south Florida in a large populated area so the wait time was unusually long. She does have AAA but didn't have the card on her so she went with the backup. She was just disappointed and concerned as she has not had a break down since 1995 and this was her first Korean car. She was always a Honda/Acura fan but Hyundai surprised her with the Sonata. A serious failure so early has shaken her confidence in the car a bit.

Unfortunate but it's the nature of the machine. Things break. Some more than others and some less. Mom was disappointed with a fuel pump failure at 17,000 miles? Sure. Ask me about the Mercedes S55 AMG with the hand-built engine - where the engine replacement alone costs more than the entire Sonata lol - with the failed engine at 23 miles... No that's not a typo. TWENTY-THREE lol.

I need to correct the diagnosis. The fuel pump was fine. The fuel injector is what failed. Anyone seen this happen?
