Road Trip

Just drove up to my Western NY location from Central FL with my
2018 2.0T Limited.

The good: Many good things. Best of all, the gas mileage averaged just under 35 mph. Low of 33.5 and high of 37.

The bad: The headlights SUCK. Low beam has a very sharp cut off (to not blind oncoming drivers). One problem with this, is when on the Interstate, I can't read the road signs unless I flip on the brights. All road signs, both above/across the lane, or on the shoulder, are above the cutoff line of the headlight beam.

Also, when returning to on ramp (after refueling), if the on ramp is not lighted, you can't see the entrance. . Even the headlights that follow curves in the road don't light those corners. (Wish I had Cornering lamps like I had years ago). One time, even though I was going very very slow, I did not want to chance turning left and finding that I was not on the ramp, so I passed the entrance on purpose, turned around at a better lighted driveway, then found and turned Right into the ramp.

The automatic high beam works good, but the light itself could be a lot better.

Lights work ok around town, but on the open road, they SUCK.

Eighteen months and 24K with my 2015 Sport 2.0T Limited. No complaints about the headlights. Did a 3300 mile road trip back in June through the desert southwest - Dallas to Tucson overnight, on to Newport Beach for a few days. On to Sedona and back to Dallas. My best average was 33.5 but was traveling heavy. Besides my other half and luggage, I carry an 18 inch spare, my 2.5 ton floor jack, my trusty 20 year old 5 gauge 20ft jumper cables, and a small tool kit. Not to mention the bride's gown, the grooms tux, and a bunch of other crap for their wedding lol.

33.5 mpg on 2.0T at freeway speeds IMO is great, Ive done over 30 mpg on trips fomm LA to Vegas at speeds of 70-90 mph.

How much room do you have left in the trunk with a 2.5 ton jack, tools, 12' jumpers and a full size spare? Is the jack aluminum, seems like even a 1.5 ton aluminum is over kill when there are many 1.5 ton compact floor jacks or a quality sissor jack will work for road side repairs. The newer portable car starter / jumpers are great extra power sources for starting a car, charging a phone or computer and work light etc and are the smaller than 2" x 5" x 6'.

OP, your mileage was great, sorry to hear the headlights performed poorly, do you think an adjustment will help? My 2017 lights are fine, no complaints

The jack is also something I've had for 20+ years. It's a compact Craftsman (not aluminum). The jack, the cables coiled up, small driver set in a hard case, and a small socket set in a soft pouch all fit in an old gym bag so trunk space is not an issue. And that's with the OE 18 inch wheel & tire as my spare.

One thing I forgot to mention in "The Good". Car did not use a drop of oil in the 1250+ mile trip. Not a drop.

Weather here is very warm for WNY. In th high 80's, but will cool down starting tomorrow. Will stay for a few weeks, but will return to Florida by the end of October, before the first snow, which happens sometime between. November 3rd and 11th.

Per the headlights on my 2018. Don't know if they are the same as those on my 2015, as I've never taken a long trip at night with the 2015. All I know is that the 2018 low beam has a very sharp, well defined cut off that caused me to not be able to see Interstate road signs. Have to flip on high beams to see the signs.
Also, wish it had "cornering lamps" that come on when turn signal is on. Previous "luxury cars" I've owned had this feature, but then again, the Sonata is not a luxury car. Come to think of it, even the Genesis V8 I owned a few years ago did not have cornering lamps.

Don't mind the rest of the current mess lol but in the black gym bag is: jack, handle, cables, and both tool kits. Four-point lug wrench is under the cargo mat.

I've been driving Sonata SE-2016 for a few months, and I agree that when you are making a turn in a dark (unlit) area, it is very hard to see where you are turning to with the low-beams. Driving frequently at night in rural Texas, in the complete absence of ambient light, I've experienced it many times, especially when turning to narrow driveways/ramps.

My non-luxury Nissan Altima SE 2001 had cornering lights (that turned on when the turn signal was activated).

Are these the new led headlights? Just curious. I know on my 15 with factory hid it also has a very sharp cut on off but I'm always getting flashed as ppl think the brights are on. Road signs are illuminated fine. I'd have them check them out and raise them a tad if needed.
