License plate bolts

Hello,
With some searches on this forum, I've read that the license plate bolt size is M6-1.0 x 16mm. I found some places selling them as "Phillips Round Washer Head Thread Cutting License Plate Screws".

My question is... do they *HAVE* to be thread cutting? I'm looking at putting some spanner screws on my rear license plate. If I just get some M6-1.0 x 16mm stainless steel pan head spanner screws, will they fit just as well as the "Thread cutting" bolts? Or will I need to add some type of insert?

Robert

They will work just fine, Robert. Usually, length becomes the issue when the car owner is adding a thicker frame over their license plate. I went to Home Depot and bought longer ones. Cost about a dollar for a package of two in stainless steel. "M6." Perfect fit.

Ahh. Thanks OkieRich. The only problem there is Home Depot doesn't carry metric spanner screws. HOWEVER knowing a simple sheet metal spanner screw will work, now it is just finding myself a local source of spanner screws without having to buy 100 of them.

Lowe's? And have you checked the aisles of either store that have the individual drawers of fasteners, washers, nuts, bolts, etc. Standard and Metric. Sold individually or in small pack quantities, like 2. They haven't failed me yet.

I will check Lowes. We also have some specialty fastener shops that may also help. While the spanner screws aren't a theft prevention, they will be a small deterrent.

Thanks for the advice/input.

Try ace hardware or tractor supply. Both places sell individual bolts of all sizes
