Hello!

I was getting an oil change yesterday when the mechanic told me that the car needed a power steering flush every 30k miles or so. The Hyundai manual doesnt ask me to have it done at the current of 44k miles on my 08 Sonata. I called up Hyundai and they said that I needed to get it done and if I didnt, it would void the warranty on power steering pumps and other associated parts.

I have been looking at older threads on this topic and feel that the general opinion is that its not required till it is required. By the way, I am the second owner and hence I have 5/60 on the warranty.

Comments?

At 44K I've never had mine done. If I want I'll do it myself. Remove some with a turkey baster, refill, steer, remove, refill, steer, you get the idea.

E-How.com has a rather complex procedure for flushing power steering fluid.

But, they say it's good for 200,000 miles, or, in the alternative, to flush it four times per century (I think they're serious).

Sounds good to me -- Unless I found dead roaches or frogs or something floating around in it, I would leave it alone.

This idea of promoting flushes, in general, was heavily promoted by the radio/tv talk show host Pat Goss, who concidentally owned a very profitable garage and also promoted BG stuff. I think there may have been a profit motive in there somewhere, but I don't want to jump to conclusions.

I have to agree with craigbrooks. The easiest way to keep the fluid clean is to suck out the reservoir and replace with new fluid. I do it often, like when I change the oil. I also do the brake master cylinder and the clutch fluid the same way. My car looks terrible, but it has the cleanest fluids around.

The ideal tool for this purpose would be an old fashioned battery filler. They are out of style with the new sealed batt's. But, they can still be had on Ebay and elsewhere (but probably not in stores).

Do you mean "a Hyundai dealer" said that?

Find another dealer.

With all that money you spent in fluids, you could be driving a new Hyundai Car made this Century?

Thanks for all the inputs folks! You all are always helpful! I shall get a second opinion on all of this.

: Yes I meant a Hyundai dealer.

Why ask a car dealer who only wants your money, when you have your manual book handy?!
