Help! Fuel injector service kit?

The tip of the injectors have a little plastic oring (pintle?) that holds the rubber oring in place. I am changing out the intake gasket and the injector rail was resting on the \valve cover, and the plastic is BRITTLE and broke.. Actually, 2 out of 4 are toast. I don't want to replace all 4 injectors for the little plastic retainer!

Ta heck with it. I just put it back together without the oring retainers on 3 out of 4 injectors. I will just have to remember if I ever have to do this stupid operation again.

To anyone who has to change out this manifold gasket, a couple of pointers. When you remove the connectors for the injectors, take the little orange silicone gaskets off and store them. They will disappear.

Remove the cooling fan. Only takes a couple minutes, and is much easier to get to the two bottom support bolts.

You'll want a wobble socket for the passenger side manifold bolt.

I found it easier to remove the throttle body to get to the coolant line clamps. YMMV.

I did not have the luxury of time to finish this, but if I were to take it apart, here is the kit needed:

Motor Man - I4 Fuel Injector Service Kit 028471 2.0L Dodge Plymouth

The issue is, taking out the fuel injectors off the rail, the retainer for the orings will be very brittle. I wonder if the pros who do this everyday just unbolt the rail and leave the injectors in place on the manifold. You take the injector/rail assembly out, and so much as touch the tip of the injector, and they fall apart.

The danger is when removing the injectors a couple years later, the oring will stay in place (stuck in manifold) or worse, fall down in the port. Not a big deal if you realize it, and remove it. And, it's only an oring, the engine could prolly happily munch it anyway.

I've done valve cover jobs on an Azera and on a Kia Sorento, both with the 3.8. I don't recall entirely but I did not have to mess with the fuel injectors at all, maybe take the connectors off? I don't remember but I did not pull the fuel rail at all. Are you doing the lower intake gasket for some reason?
