I know there's lots of camera buffs here, and James and I were kinda hijacking Volovoid"s thread, so I figured I'd start one here.

I have a pile of cameras. I have pocket P&S models, compact DSLRs, a couple bridge cameras, and a few Nikon DSLRs, a Fuji S2 and a couple Olympus 4/3 cameras.

I like a lot of them, the Nikons have great colour, the Olympus E cameras are great grab and go, I have a Pentax K-r (first new camera I bought in 30 years) that also has fantastic colours, but the one area almost all of them fall flat in is focus. The Pentax is a little more forgiving because you can attach a lens (ANY Pentax K mount works, and I have a pile!) and then adjust the camera's focusing system to make the best use of the lens. Still, it has it's issues.

The Nikons take great shots, but a lot of them look a bit fuzzy. I have some good lenses for those, too, and the better lenses yeild better results.

So, I have been looking for yet another camera, new this time and something that would take decent shots. I used a Fuji X-S1 Superzoom bridge and was fairly impressed, but going to DPReview and comparing it to others it just kinda falls out. It would be a good grab and go, but I took care of that by getting a 28-200mm Sigma 4/3 lens for the Olympus.

So I've been looking for something decent, and actually shying away from Canikons and looking more towards Fuji and Olympus. They have some really good stuff; Fuji has the X-T1 and X-T10, and Olympus has the OM D E1, E5 and E10, but the 4/3 sensor is limited, anthough any of those, and the Fujis will give good pics even in low light.

So I was using DPReview to compare cameras I like and can afford using their comparison tool. I had an X-T1 (this camera is just so COOL because most of the controls are on dials on top of the piece; if you started out with old Leicas and Minoltas film cameras you know what I mean). Everything can be adjusted on the fly by spinning a dial. Image quality is decent, low light is decent but it gives up a lot in shadows.

So I was comparing an OM D E1, a Nikon D750, and a couple others and then started ramoing through the choices. I fouund one that said "Phase One IQ80(benchmark)" and pulled it up. HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!

The IQ80 is a camera back for 645 Large Format digital cameras. I think it will fit the few 645s out there, from Pentax, Leica and Hassleblad, and it's 80 megapixels. That was enough to knock me over; I didn't even bother with colour bit depth or anything.

So then I started compaing the cameras in their list to it. All the usual stuff fell right on their faces in comparison. Then I clicked on one. Wow. Almost as nice in a DSLR format.

I'm gonna let you look for yourselves:

This is a $3100 DSLR, that only uses their own lenses, but WOW!

Just for laughs, leave the IQ80 and this camera up, and pull up the Samsung NX1 and NX500, and bear in mind while the NX500 costs $2600, the NX1 can be had for under $700. For a REA: laugh, pull up the Sigma dp2 Quattro; it is a fixed lanes, 28mm IIRC. DO NOT put it into JPEG mode or else you might lose your lunch, but in RAW it will stand up with the best for quite a ways through the ISO range. It too is a very inexpensive camera.

I guess I'll just hold my pennies, shoot what I have and hope they use that magnificent 40mp sensor in another model aimed at us poor folk...

Oh, there's a movable widget in the center of the test picture you can move around. To the left of that there is a woodblock print of an old lady in a rocking chair with a "sea captain" and two girls looking at a painting. Move the widget to this image and then around that section to really get a good idea of what 99.9% of cameras miss.

I moved from a fuji S5000 to a Sony A230 and now to the SLT A58 (which I love) and it works with all my Minolta/sony len's.
I then use G.I.M.P to edit the images.
Nikons now use the sony sensor so the nikcannon badge is starting to be removed and replaced with the nikony badge as the exmor RS sensor starts to spreadout through the market (some samsungs now use sonys)
Sony have changed the accessory shoe on the A58 to what I believe is the "Standard" fitting.
The first Image taken on the A58, the second on the A230

I know Sony has been supplying sensors for a mot of manufacturers; in the big tidal wave in Thailand a few years ago there were two things you couldn't get: WD or Seagate hard drives, or any camera based on a Sony sensor, and that turned out to be quite a few, from the Nikon D90 and a couple other Nikons and also Pentax and a couple others. But I have yet to see any kind of detail approaching that 40MP monster in the 7R II.

I don't always fall for specs, a good image is a good image, but that thing just blows away just about anything on the market!

That said, I have a couple examples, but I have to pull them up later.

I can't find my second=favourite picture! I had a disk blow up and I'm afraid it went with it, and I can't find a backup

these two:

Were from a 10MP Fuji S1000FD

These

Are from an 8MP Olympus FE280 I paid $22 for.

Couple more from some more advanced cameras. From my Pentax K-r:

Colours really pop on the Pentax.

From the "broken" Olympus E-510:

I like the E-510 for it's handling, but it has issues. Maybe being broken with a 2nd quality lens has something to do with it.

Didn't you know Hyundai makes cameras?

Right now they're using them for backup cameras only, but soon there's going to be a 2.4MP 4 cylinder version. :/
