Question Reduced acceleration, what to check?

I have a '12 GLS Accent, about 50k on it. I know this is not a Maserati, but pick-up seems very sluggish, and going up hills I usually hear knocking.

Any suggestions on things I can check on (fuel filter?) or do to improve performance? Higher grade fuel?

Nearing 60k miles is an interval for changing timing belt .. reminder

Clean the IAC, throttle plate (caution), EGR, MAP
Throw a bottle of injector cleaner in gas tank

Check fuel pressure
Check compression
Check TPS

Hmm, knocking?
Timing or grade of gasoline??

2012 Accent uses timing chain not a belt. Throttle body is also fly by wire. Checking fuel pressure can be dangerous with 1750 psi on direct injection system.

Knocking under load seems to affect some Accent GDI engines. There are quite a few posts about it on this forum. Other than using premium fuel, there really hasn't been a sure fix found.

As for performance... Have you owned the car for a while and just noticed that it's becoming more sluggish over time? Or did you just get it?

If it's been getting worse over time, then you probably need to fix something. But if you just got it, and you're comparing it to other cars you've driven, then it may be subjective and not a fault with the vehicle.

Yeah, was just throwing some checks out there.
I wrote caution on the throttle plate cause the newer ones will fail if you mess with them incorrectly.
And yeah, the fuel pressure at 1750 is way too high for the average gauge.
I would assume one that is made for measuring diesel fuel pressure would be better?

LSPI is the spontaneous ignition of the fuel/air mixture prior to spark-triggered ignition. Its another version of pre-ignition, which has been around since engines were invented. In this case, though, it occurs under low-speed, high-torque conditions in turbocharged gasoline-direct-injected (TGDI) engines. As far as I know non-turbos dont experience this.

(AMSOIL dealer speaking now) New regulations on fuel economy and emissions have pushed the automotive industry to develop smaller, more efficient engines. The prominence of direct injection (GDI) and turbochargers employed to meet rising corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards is placing new burdens on motor oil. Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and increased engine temperatures are two of the more serious challenges to arise from the use of GDI and turbos.

After months of vigorous testing, AMSOIL has produced new formulations that far surpass the latest standards and add another level of performance and protection to an already solid foundation.

Make sure your 2012 Accent has been to the dealership to receive all ECU firmware updates. I have a 2013 that had a ping/knock issue. Nothing I tried in the way of valve cleaning sprays or fuel treatments ever helped. Resetting ECU by disconnecting the battery didn't help either. Using higher octane gas was the only way to eliminate the pinging.

One day Hyundai sent me a notice to bring my car in. The reason given for the recall was that newer firmware would prevent the car's diagnostic computer from erroneously reporting a evap system leak. Nothing was said about knock or ping, or anything besides the evap system. I brought the car in, they reflashed it, and it has not pinged since. I can use 87 octane, and climb hills and the engine is quiet. It also doesn't get the fuel economy it used to either. But who knows, maybe the new firmware changed how the computer estimates and reports fuel consumption? It clearly was designed to do a lot more than merely tweak how the computer reads pressure levels in the evap system.

If you have a 2012, make sure it has been to the vet for all its shots.
