How to fix a small dent where paint was removed?

I had a very unlucky day last week. Driving approx 65km/h, I ran over something which flew up and hit my rear driver's side door. In the side view mirror I saw it flipping around in the wind and land flat on the ground, perhaps it was a piece of sheet metal or something. It left a small but deep dent in the door.

It looks like somebody held a quarter's edge against the door and hit it with a hammer. Obviously the paint was chipped off in the dent and there is about 1 square inch of bare metal showing. I will try to take a picture and post it.

The body shop at the dealer estimated it would cost $980 to fix it. He said they would remove the door panel, repair it and repaint it, and then they have to 'blend' the paint on the driver's front door and the rear flank of the car because the fresh paint would not match the faded paint.

Right now I am thinking I don't want to spend a thousand bucks to fix such a small dent. There must be a way that I can fix it (imperfectly) maybe with the touch-up paint pen that I bought with the car. Would that work? Should I worry about rust?

I have a similar dent just below my fuel door. Took it to a body shop for an estimate and basically was given an astronomical price to repair this small dent. I opted to just live with this dent (...adds character I guess?). I stopped by Advanced Auto and picked up a touch up paint pen/brush. I touched up the dent and then applied quite a few coats of wax over the touched up area to protect it. Well it's been a few months and so far so good. Touch up paint is still in tact. If anything, I may re-touch up the area a bit and rewax. Heck, it's only a car right? We have absolutely no control of road debris that gets kicked into orbit by other cars around us. The front bumper of my Sonata has a few rock chips from uncontrollable pebbles that were put into orbit by other cars around me. Good luck with yer dent bro...

you can also remove a dent with a hairdryer and an air duster I like this one even more, namely because an air duster and a hairdryer is readily accessible in most homes these days. A slightly different process, but still very quick, cheap and easy. or might want some assistants for this one.

See YouTube link. May not work for your dent if it is deep. Seems to work better on large area dents.

I had my front driver door repainted recently. I had a paint chip, and did not want to deal with touchup paint on a new car. I got a deal at the dealships bodyshop, about $370. Just tell them you are paying cash, and not going through insurance. Winter time is usually slow for bodyshops, and they are willing to deal..

This kind of damage is usually covered by the Comprehensive portion of your insurance policy. So depending on your deductible (some folks have zero deductible) it may not cost you much out of your own pocket.

Well isn't that just nifty! I have a small dent on my passenger side...I would assume this wouldn't work due to it's 'smallness'. Bummer. But this is cool nonetheless! Thanks!

It is better to remove the dent first and then paint the door!

Repair Quote Too Hight

I would seek out another body shop. The price quote given is too much for a small dent. It pays to get several quotes for such work and insure your not being ripped off.

Or, you could try filling the dent with a little body filler, sanding it smooth, priming, and spray paint with a can of pre-mixed paint matching your Sonata's paint code. You would also need a can of clear coat. Such spray cans are available on line for about $20 each. One source. Repair directions are available for such repairs on this site. How good it turns out will depend on you.

If you don't like the results, spend the big bucks to fix at the body shop. It would not be more after the repair.
