P0456 code

Wife's car had a check engine light this morning, code is PO456, small evap leak, I took gas cap off cleaned the filler neck and siliconed the gas cap seal, and reset the light. I filled her car up on Sunday (2011 Sonata 2.4 80000 miles). Any thoughts on where to go next if light comes back on? Purge valve ? Thanks

It could be any one of the following:

1. faulty gas cap;
2. faulty/damaged fuel filler pipe;
3. leaking, disconnected, or plugged fuel vapor lines;
4. faulty CCV;
5. faulty PCSV;
6. faulty canister; or
7. faulty fuel tank pressure sensor.

A bit of a needle in a haystack without the right diagnostic tools, but you started at the right place.

Latest rash of 0456 we seeing is the result of the endcap of canister cracking.. Nitrogen test wagon is what we has to look for leaks.. isolate canister, pressurize, and bottle of soapy water (I use AXE body wash, smells nice) and spray around and watch for bubbles..

I don't know how effective it is to randomly change out the purge valve and other parts which are (cheap $25-35) if I can't diagnose what part is causing the leak, How hard is it to change the charcoal cannister? Thanks!

Purge and CCV not regular fail items for us.. we can use GDS to make PCM do an EVAP self test and we can actually verify our repair prior to releasing car back to owner..

You can pull vent off and pressurize system, but best to use proper test equipment to do pressure test, as you can very well swell up tank to larger capacity, or blow canister apart..

Tossing parts is $$$$ for this car, and you really wont know the result right away, as EVAP self test happen when PCM see conditions right to so.. Canister is upward of $200 I think, and you need to drop exhaust down, and sway bar to sneak the module out.

Ok, I will hope that the gas cap was not sealed and then if the light comes back on I guess a trip to the Dealer is warranted ...

Only stuff we have is Soft Soap in small pump bottles for restrooms up front.. put that in a spray bottle and leave it sit.. it smells like butt after while.

The AXE keeps smelling fine, masks the road smell smell while under car looking for EVAP leak

So it's been 7 days and about 400 miles, since I reset the light and cleaned and retightened the gas cap, no check engine light!! I am hoping that it just wasn't tightened down well and or corrosion around the filler tube. thanks for the replies ?
